چکیده

The short-term therapeutic effect of oral hypoglycaemic agents has been assessed in 12 patients with symptomatic diabetes secondary to chronic pancreatitis (pancreatic diabetes). In six patients who had moderate to severe carbohydrate intolerance, associated with severe insulinopaenia during arginine infusion, the potent sulphonylurea chlorpropamide produced no change in the fasting blood glucose level after two weeks of treatment. This contrasted with the significant reduction produced in a matched group of maturity-onset primary diabetics. The six patients with milder diabetes, and a greater (although still subnormal) insulin secretory capacity, showed an improvement in oral glucose tolerance during the first hour following glucose administration while on chlorpropamide. When the biguanide phenformin was substituted for chlorpropamide in five of these patients, a statistically insignificant improvement in glucose tolerance was observed during treatment. Applications of these findings to the practical management of pancreatic diabetes are briefly considered.

Hypoglycemic effect of Biophytum sensitivum in the alloxan diabetic rabbits.

Hypoglycaemic effect of a Neapalese plant Biophytum sensitivum was investigated in the alloxan diabetic male rabbits of different severities: subdiabetic (Alloxan recovered; AR), mild diabetic (MD) and severely diabetic (SD). Assessment of activity of the extract, prepared from the plant leaves, was done by fall in fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and improvement in the oral glucose tolerance test ...

The hypoglycaemic action of metformin.

Twenty-four-hour excretion of D-xylose after oral administration in nine diabetic patients, and of 3-0methyl-D-glucose in six patients, showed no significant change after treatment with metformin. There was, however, a significant reduction in mean fasting blood glucose levels in thirteen patients from 160 to 115 mg/ 100 ml (P <0001), and the intravenous glucose tolerance improved in twelve of ...

Screening Mildly Hypoglycaemic Compounds: Obese British Angora Rabbits with Borderline Glucose Intolerance as Animal Model

An obese animal model having mild glucose intolerance was developed by intravenous administration of sub-optimal dose of alloxan to British Angora rabbits. Mild hypoglycaemic activity of crude extract prepared from leaves of a Nepalese herb Biophytum sensitivum, which was missed by the conventional diabetic animal models, was demonstrable in these animals. Initial fasting hyperglycaemia observe...

Hypoglycaemic effects of methanolic extract of Canscora decussata (Schult) whole-plant in normal and alloxan-induced diabetic rabbits.

In present study hypoglycaemic effects of the crude powdered C. decussata and its methanolic extract (ME) in alloxan diabetic rabbits were evaluated. The hypoglycaemic effect was measured by blood glucose, insulin level, HbA1c and his to pathology of pancreas. Glucose lowering effect of the ME was studied in diabetic rabbits. The effects of extract on blood glucose, body weight, food in take, f...

Hypoglycaemic and antihyperglycaemic activity of Ageratum conyzoides L. in rats.

The hypoglycaemic and antihyperglycaemic properties of the aqueous extracts of the leaves of Ageratum conyzoides L. were evaluated in normoglycemic and in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, in order to validate its use in folk medicine. Tested animals were given the aqueous extracts of the plant at the doses of 100, 200 and 300mg/kg. These doses were tested also on glucose loaded normal male...
